THE FLYING SCOTSMAN
Probably the most famous Steam Locomotive of all time. Built in 1923 and presented at the British Empire Exhibition in 1924.
4472 was the first locomotive put into service by London and North Eastern Railways on the Edinburgh to London express service, completing the non-stop trip in an unprecedented 8 hours and 3 minutes, earning the name ‘The Flying Scotsman’. the ‘train’ became the first steam train to travel over 100 miles per hour (on November 30th 1934),a nd this was recognised by the Guinness Book or Records..
I became aware of the locomotove though Hornby model railways, where ‘The Fling Scotsman - 4472 - was the top of the line.
The loco and train are pictured here travelling through some idealised 1930s Britsh countryside.
