S S POESEIDON
From the 1972 movie ‘The Poseidon Adventure’ produced by IRWIN ALLEN and Directed by RONALD NEAME.
Based on the novel by PAUL GALLICO
‘The Poseidon Adventure’ was a smash hit ushering in the wave of ‘disaster movies’ that dominated the early 1970s. The story follows a group of survivors who endeavour to escape from an Ocean Liner that has overturned, The film follows their thrilling exploits through the various upside areas of the sinking ship. This is a great movie.
Early scens in the filam, prior to teh disaster were filmed on the Queen Mary, and the shots shwoing the full ship are done with a miniature which also matches the Queen Mary. In fact the model of the SS Poseidon built for the film resides on the Long Beach maritme museum alongside the actual Queen Mary.
This painting shows the ship forging ahaed at tip speed through heavy waves. In the story the ship is said to be overlaoded and top heavy to boot, hence it overturns.

Evidently there were plans for Airfix to do a kit of this Nautilus, but this never amounted to anything.
I imagine this in black plastic or possibly the brown plastic used for some of the military vehicles such as the ‘Russian T34’.
There are several garage kits of this ship now available. But I saw the film in the cinema as a UK Re-Release in 1978 and would have LOVED to have had a kit of the Nautilus back then!
