IRON MOLE

From the 1976 Amicus Production ‘AT THE EARTH’S CORE’, adapted from the book by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

In the film the machine is launched from a trestle ramp moved into position via railway locomotives. This imaginary model kit is therefore in the popular scale of model and toy locomotives ‘OO’ or 1/76th. The latter scale being common for military vehicles kits. In this scale I am estimating that the model would be approximately 12” (30cm) in length. I imagine this in the same grey / silver plastic that they used on their WW2 US bombes like the B-17 and B-29.

The Iron Mole was created as a beautiful 10ft miniature. This model still exists and is currently undergoing restoration and will soon to be on display at the new ‘National Film and Sci-Fi Museum‘ in Milton Keynes, England.
