GERMAN AIRSHIP from ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’ directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by George Lucas

Indy and his dad escape from Berlin on an airship. The airship looks massive in the film and closely resembles the Hindenburg in its design. for the purposes of the ‘What If..’ box artwork I have assumed it is the same size. I have put this in  1/700 scale – matchbox’s scale of choice for battleships and it would be approx. 25cm / 14 inches.

The biplane carried underneath was a real feature utilized on US Airships of the era - the Akron and Macon.

A large scale model is used to depict the airship in the handful of shots in which is appears.

Matchbox kits were moulded in 2 or 3 colours so that they didn’t need painting!
